Finding a good priced apt on Oahu?
Hi,
I am exiled on the Mainland and considering a return to the islands. I used to live on the Big Island but cannot return there because my ex lives there…I would like to go back to the islands but I am trying to avoid further pain. However, we both lost a house that is in short sale and may go to foreclosure. We also had a car that had to be auctioned off and neither of us has paid any of the remaining payments yet. This all happened because my ex lost his job and then we got divorced, and he won’t help with any payments. Therefore, my question is: how difficult is it to find something like a little cabin near the sea in rural Oahu? Is there even a ‘rural Oahu’? And obviously credit checks will get me into trouble. Does this mean I can never go home?
Try the website hicentral.com. It lists units for rent and purchase on all islands. I used to work for a property managing company on Oahu, so I know that your credit situation will be a big ding on any applications you fill out. You might want to look for a private owner who’s renting a unit instead of using a managing company. Look on craigslist.org, honoluluadvertiser.com or starbulletin.com for other options.
There’s still ‘rural’ Oahu, but it’s Nanakuli, Waianae, Kaaawa, etc – not central and if you’re going to be working in Honolulu, the commute will be a bugger. If you can get a unit in Ewa, Makakilo or near Kalaeloa (it used to be some military base), there’s now a service called TheBoat. It’s a trial basis, so don’t know if it’ll be permanent, but it’s a boat that runs from Kalaeloa to Honolulu several times in the morning and afternoon.
