Foreclosure Mayor

Do you understand this about South Florida mayor, IRS, and state tax?

1) He owes $1,800 in unpaid state sales tax.

I’m not too familiar w/ state sales tax but I take it it’s just like the tax that vendors and store owners have to report monthly?

2) The money he owes the IRS, is that profit which he hasn’t been reporting?

3) If he were to declare bankruptcy–after all he is in foreclosure which means he’s not making enough to pay the mortgage–I believe he’ll be able to keep the home. But can he get the IRS off his back somehow, or would he still owe the $200k?

unpaid sales tax is exactly that, he failed to either file and pay or probably did not pay the sales tax he reported
there is no income tax in Fla so he would not be subject to anything in that regard
if he owes the IRS, it means he didn’t pay what he was required to do when he filed his income tax return, it could be unreported income, it could be errors on his tax return, it could be any number of things he failed to disclose
filing for bankruptcy does not discharge tax liabilities
